For twenty years, Marc Mac's Black History Soundbite Series has existed somewhere between all three. Beginning in 2006 with "It's Right to Be Civil", Marc Mac quietly embarked on what has become one of the most original long-form projects in contemporary independent music. Conceived not simply as albums but as audio documentaries pressed onto vinyl, each release combines original production with carefully curated speeches, interviews, broadcasts, and historical recordings, transforming fragments of Black history into immersive musical journeys. When Marc set out on creating the series he couldn't imagine how important it would have become today in a time where some institutions are masterminding plans to suppress black history. Across six volumes ("It's Right to Be Civil", "Extend the Knowledge", "Message From Soulville", "Generation X", "All Power to the People", and "The Invisible Soldiers") the soundbites drop names and instances that allow the listener to explore further. Rather than sampling history for effect, Marc Mac built beats around it, armed with a sampling drum machine (MPC) and Logic Pro, every beat serves the narrative. Musically, the series is unmistakably Marc Mac in his beat mode. Boom Bap, Jazz, and Soul. A mixtape aesthetic remains central to the project.
