The Greek Nikos Skalkottas has remained a "composer for musicians" to this day. In other words, most musicians know his name, but hardly anyone has heard, let alone played his music. The monumental concerto No. 3 for piano, ten winds and percussion, probably written in 1939, was only premiered in 1969, but because of it's enormous demands on the soloists was shared between three pianists. Daan Vandewalle presents his reading of this masterpiece, accompanied by Ensemble Blattwerk under Johannes Kalitzke. Daan Vandewalle enjoys an international reputation as new music specialist, with a strong focus on 20th and 21th century American piano music. He studied at the Conservatory of Ghent, Belgium with Claude Coppens and at Mills College, California with Alvin Curran. He gave concerts and lectures devoted to American music throughout the world. He is a fellow of the Belgian-American Educational Foundation and teaches piano at the conservatory of Ghent, Belgium.
