Founding fathers of rhythm and blues vocal harmony, the highly influential Orioles with lead Singer Sonny Til were the first African-American vocal group to target a young African-American audience. The group debuted in 1948, and their second single, the ballad "It's Too Soon to Know", went to number 1 on the R&B charts in late 1948.
